Onion Potato Shaak/Sabji

- by The Coco Nut

So I was really craving Indian food the other day and I had A LOT of onions so I figured I would try to make something. I decided to make 'Kanda Bataka nu shaak'.
I knew it wouldn't turn out to be that good, but I thought I'd at least give it a try and see what happened. I needed onions, potatoes, turmeric, coriander powder, cumin, and mustard seeds. Well, some other things too, but I didn't have those so I worked with what I had. Cutting everything was really annoying, especially the onions because I kept crying, but I survived! While I was cutting the onions and the potatoes, I started tempering the mustard seeds and cumin in some butter. After it started crackling I added the onions and potatoes and let it cook for a bit. I hate my stove because it's electric and I can never get it to be right, so my onions started to burn a bit, so I had to take it off the heat and just stir it a lot. It was kind of annoying, and I think I had too many potatoes, but I like potatoes, so it didn't really seem like that big of a deal to me.

After the onions and potatoes cooked for a bit I added some more cumin powder and the turmeric. This was kind of a fail because I didn't want to use a spoon to get the turmeric out so I tried to just pour a bit out of the container, but then I thought it was too much, so whoops for that. I think overall it turned out to be okay. After that, I added some water and covered it and let it cook for a bit more until all the water was gone.

The finished product looked like this. It looked very Indiany, but it tasted kind of bland. I added some salt and pepper but it didn't help much. Other than being bland, I thought it tasted fine.

Some of the potatoes were cut too big so they were under cooked. The ones that were cooked tasted like Indian food, just very bland Indian food. I think next time I'll use less potatoes but cut them smaller and add some other spice to give it more of a taste. My goal for this semester is to try to cook Indian food at least once a month, hopefully something different every month. The other thing with the recipe was that I cut it in half but I still feel like I made too much. The original recipe was for 4 servings, so I thought I could make 2 servings, but this is definitely more than 2 servings. I guess that person's family just eats big servings. :)
